JANUARY FEATURED PRINT OF THE MONTH
Jen Rogers - Seascape and astrophotographer.
BIO: My parents bought me a second hand manual Praktica camera for my 22nd birthday. I’d just moved to Scotland to study for my PhD and discovered hill walking. The camera became an extension of my love of the outdoors and remains so today.
Landscape photography has always been my passion, I have a particular love of water and seascapes. In 2010 we moved to Bideford on the North coast of Devon. I’m attracted to wild places and have spent many hours exploring the rocky coast of Devon by foot, snorkeling and by kayak, particularly the area around Hartland which has spectacular cliffs and hidden coves with ledges and pinnacles. I’m attracted to moody weather and bold colours, my images almost always have an element of movement or drama. I am happiest on the edge of or immersed in the water, and am often seen balanced with my tripod on a rock with water surging around me. In 2018 I discovered astrophotography, and I love to combine the night sky and seascapes. There is something really special about standing on a beach under the night sky watching the stars and listening to the sea. As a scientist I enjoy a technical challenge, astrophotography certainly fulfils that need! I particularly enjoy wide angle astrophotography, my aim is to capture the night sky in the context of the landscape, particularly over the sea.
Jen Rogers is an astro and seascape photographer based in North Devon. She was shortlisted for Astrophotographer of the Year in 2020 and 2022, Runner up in Landscapes at Night and Commended in the Historic Britain categories of Landscape Photographer of the Year 2022 and winner of the Your Path and Nature categories of the South West Coast Path Photographer of the Year competition in 2024. Jen has been published in Outdoor Photography, Canon Photoplus magazine and Digital SLR Photography magazine.
FEBRUARY FEATURED PRINT OF THE MONTH
Heather Tonge
BIO:
‘DEFENDER’
Whitehaven’s West Pier during Storm Éowyn
Heather Tonge is a landscape photographer from Cumbria (though currently based in Berkshire).
Heather predominantly photographs the earth’s natural untamed beauty and has always preferred cooler climates, mountains, the sea, and being outdoors.
A recent trip to the Lake District fortuitously coincided with Storm Éowyn and Heather had no hesitation heading to the coast, specifically Whitehaven (in the afternoon when it was safer!)
It was a fantastic time photographing the waves crashing onto the pier and over the lighthouse in wonderful lighting conditions.
Heather grew up in Whitehaven but this was the first time she’d seen the pier under siege like this in such spectacular conditions.
MARCH FEATURED PRINT OF THE MONTH
Lindsay Southgate
BIO:
"My happiest memories since childhood are related to spending time on a beach. As it is often said that the experiences which form us are reflected in our work that probably explains my preference for heading to beaches for my photography. Having lived in Cornwall for the last twenty years that is far from a hardship!
On a wide open beach I find peace and calm, whatever the weather and however ferocious or calm the sea. The far distant horizon, the movement of the water and how the sea, sky and land intersect all fascinate me and encourage me to try to capture the emotion I feel just being there at that moment in time.
I also love travelling from my home in the far south west to the Hebrides in the far north west where this image was taken in February this year. As those of us who are lucky enough to have spent time on The Hebrides know, the light, weather conditions and beautiful colours offer a seascape photographer wonderful opportunities. My memories of this day will live long in my mind - a strong sea running, a bright day and a keen wind. A very happy day!"
