Over the course of 2024 a momentum is building - Empowering women in photography of all genres is becoming at the forefront of the photography community.
Unfortunately for many years females have been vastly underrepresented in the photography industry. Visibility of females in photography is on the increase and a rise in community groups are leading the way by supporting & showcasing the talent of women in photography.
Earlier this year we were proud to be part of the Women Photographers UK Team, an Instagram & Facebook Page created to support & promote female photographers. Since then other community pages were set up including Women Photographers Canada by Viktoria Haack & Fiona Mclean & Women Photographers US by Anna Moon both of which share inspirational female photographers work. You may also be interested in Infocuswomen, created by Sarina Jackson & Steph Vella, one of the original community groups dedicated to inspiring others.
What we found of particular interest was the survey results carried out by Women Photographers Canada to try understand the topic further.

Our passion & inspiration is seascape photography, this is where we feel we can make a difference to women in photography by encouraging, supporting and building a community of like minded women who all share an appreciation of the sea & coast. This is why we have created LEWIS Photography - Lets Encourage Women In Seascape Photography or WISP for short.

The idea for L.E.W.I.S Photography originated in January 2024, not long after relocating to the Isle of Lewis. The island is such an inspiration to us in many ways, most of all our love of seascape photography. We have always felt passionate about encouraging & supporting women in photography, one of the main reasons amongst many others that we began our YouTube channel in 2019 was to have a female representation & presence on the platform. Previously we were invited to speak with Margaret Soraya on her podcast, Creative Soundscapes about encouraging women onto the YouTube platform & followed this up by presenting a webinar on how to get started in YouTube with the SheClicks community in 2023 where we also touched on some of the barriers for women in the field. It was a great opportunity to share our knowledge & encourage others in what is a immensely under represented platform. Relocating to the Isle of Lewis in December 2023 meant that we put a hold on creating our videos as the priority was to settle into the Island, find our way and spend time researching locations whilst being respectful of the Islands precious coastline.
One thing we decided to do as an alternative to continue with a female presence was to host our Coastal Creations Podcast, where we had the honor of speaking with some incredibly talented female photographers such as Shona Perkins, Lucie Averill, Rhiannon Lawler & Dawn Brown, something which we will continue with over winter. It was also a privilege to speak with Mali Davies on his Let’s Create Podcast earlier this year in February where we reiterated our passion for supporting & encouraging women. We now feel this is the right time and having supported with Women Photographers UK over the summer months we believe that creating a community dedicated to women in seascape photography from all over the world, something which is very close to our hearts, will gather momentum, encourage & support and showcase the talent of women in this genre of photography.
Our aim is to focus on promoting women in seascape photography whilst building an engaged community
